When I’m 18
Ahh! My album is out! Woohoo! It feels like a huge victory for me. Ever since I was a little girl, it was my dream to become a professional singer, and now here I am living my dream. What more could a girl ask for?….besides shoes and clothes. Haha.
This album is really special to me. I know it’s a cliche because every artist’s first album is special to them, but it really is true. I named it When I’m 18 after my favorite song, which was my single. The song is about….well, my dream. When I went into the studio the day I wrote the song, I felt so inspired and alive inside. The adrenaline inside of me was rushing like crazy and I was just so excited to start working and I couldn’t take my mind off the possibility that I could make it big. So, that’s how When I’m 18 came about. I was just fantasizing about what I would do when I made the big time and led a carefree life.
I think the song is mostly about having fun. It’s definitely an upbeat song that you can get up and jump around to and it gives off a good vibe, and that was what I wanted with the song. I wanted to make a song where your troubles just went away for a split second and you could go crazy and not care what anyone thought. With this song, I really wanted to send the message that everyone should keep their dreams alive, too. I think it’s really important to have dreams because it’s a motivation and a drive. With dreams, you become inspired and you work harder than ever to make the dream come true, and then you yourself become an inspiration to others and it’s just a domino effect from there. My motto is to dream big and just believe in yourself and you can go really far.
The music video kept up with the song, too. I definitely stuffed a whole bunch of different imagery components into the song, such as “sittin’ with my friends in my fancy limo” and “I’ll be out shoppin’ like there’s no tomorrow.” I didn’t know what I wanted the storyline of the video to be when the director asked me. All I knew was that I wanted the video to be very well described by the word “fun,” and I think it came across very well. I couldn’t have asked for a better music video. The cast and crew were so nice and we all got along well and it was just an absolute thrill to do the project. I can’t even describe it as work, and when that happens, you know that that’s what you want to do for the rest of your life.
As for the album, it’s just a mix of experiences that either I’ve had personally or that people around me have been through. I take inspiration from everyone and everything around me, whether it be my best friend or just hating waking up so early every morning for school. I don’t really like to set a theme for my album because it limits me and I don’t want to have to pick what to write about from a list of topics in that particular category…but sometimes, it could just come out that way. It all depends on my mood. I write songs when I’m feeling an emotion at it’s strongest.
I don’t know any better way to express myself than through song, and especially if I wrote the song. It’s the best way of communication to me, for an artist to write their own songs, which is why most of my songs are written by me. I mean, this album is my story. This album is my life compressed into three or four minute chapters. This album is me.
Love,
Meeghan
